The Island Association of Hotel and Tourist Apartment Businessmen (Asolan) has pointed to the Tías City Council for allegedly failing to submit the III Plan for Modernization, Improvement and Increase of Competitiveness of Puerto del Carmen (PMM) to the Government of the Canary Islands twice.
Asolan has reminded the council, led by José Juan Cruz Saavedra, of "the risk of losing investment capacity in the tourism sector" if said plan is not sent to the regional Executive. This initiative involves an investment of 299,802,351 euros for the town, according to the press release issued by Asolan.
From the hotel association they have lamented that "almost ending the fourth month of the year and after failing to meet up to two previously set dates, December 2022 and March 2023, the government of Tías continues without sending the text to the regional Executive, body that must give the green light to the document".
“It is urgent to have the PMM in force to be able to act and modernize the tourist infrastructures, private and public. There are establishments that have been waiting for months, with the consequent loss in opportunity and competitiveness costs, in addition to the expense incurred to be part of the Modernization Plan. There is great competition from tourist destinations and we cannot afford areas such as Puerto del Carmen to be stagnant”, says the president of the association, Susana Pérez.
According to Pérez, this document “is key to improving the competitiveness of the destination, it began 3 years ago and if public administrations do not facilitate and speed up the procedures, the tourist center of Puerto del Carmen is seriously compromised. Continuing with the modernization of public and private tourist spaces is currently the main axis of mature tourist destinations”, she added.
The III Plan for Modernization, Improvement and Increase of Competitiveness Puerto del Carmen includes a total of 45 actions. Of these, 16 actions are aimed at renovating tourist accommodation, seven actions to renovate the complementary equipment of the tourist area, seven renovation actions for specialization towards tourist use, six actions contemplated in the second Modernization Plan, three changes of ordination, three units of action, two new buildings and one action on rustic land.
