Arrieta recovers César Manrique's Wind Toy "fully restored"

The Wind Toy 'Veleta', a mobile sculpture designed and built in 1990 by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique, is back in its original location, the Arrieta roundabout, "totally restored thanks to the maintenance work carried out by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the Department of Public Works"

The councillor of the area, Saray Rodríguez, traveled this Friday to the northern town to be present during the installation of "this spectacular and heavy sculpture painted in red, which moves slowly and indicates the direction of the wind, whose last restoration was carried out 13 years ago, after the damage suffered by the Delta storm".

"More than a decade later, the Mobile Park of the Cabildo de Lanzarote dismantled, last June, the Wind Toy of Arrieta, due to new damages in its mobile structure that was rusty and barely moved, rebuilt it and since this Friday, February 16, returns and looks fully restored in its original location," said the councillor.

The works have had a cost of 10,300 euros

The maintenance works have had a cost for the Cabildo de Lanzarote of about 10,300 euros and have consisted of the reconstruction of the cones and the lower rudder, the mobile parts, the adaptation and maintenance of the support axis of the mobile elements and, among other small repairs, a polishing and painting of the rest of the toy has been carried out.

The works carried out by the Cabildo have had an execution period of five months and have had the advice of the retired worker of the Cabildo, welder and one of the hands that César Manrique used to build this Wind Toy in 1990, Salvador Hernández, and the supervision of the same by the César Manrique Foundation.
