Arrecife will change the names of some streets that allude to the Franco regime

The Government group of the Arrecife City Council will take to the next plenary session of the Corporation the change of name of several streets of the municipality, proposed by the Advisory Commission created for this purpose, from which the Popular Party recently distanced itself, for not considering it a priority for citizens.

On Tuesday, during the Informative Commission of Culture Archive, Education and Festivities, the change of street names was agreed upon as a matter of urgency, on which the representatives of the opposition decided to abstain.

On the other hand, with regard to José Antonio Street, it was decided to postpone the name change "with the purpose of achieving greater consensus", according to the Councilor for Culture, Mª Dolores Rodríguez.

The new names

Regarding the Argana Baja neighborhood, Combatientes de la Cruzada street will be renamed Luisa Linares (singer born in Arrecife) as well as Sargento Provisional street will be renamed Jesús Soto Morales.

In the Arrecife Town, Dieciocho de Julio street will be renamed Democracy, as well as General Goded street (famous general who joined different uprisings, including Franco's) will be renamed Nicolás Martín Cabrera (merchant and writer with the pseudonym "Casiano").

Likewise, Trece de Septiembre street (which alluded to the military coup of Miguel Primo de Rivera, which suspends the Constitution of 1876) will be called El Carenero (person who is dedicated to the repair of boats).

In the neighborhood of La Vega, Ruiz de Alda street (co-founder of Falange together with José Antonio Primo de Rivera) will be transformed into Antonio Armas Curbelo street (shipowner from Lanzarote).

The San Francisco Javier neighborhood will also change the name of Alférez Provisional street, which will now be called Gregorio Medina Armas (writer from Lanzarote).

On the other hand, the Titerroy neighborhood will also experience changes in one of its streets, such as the case of Onésimo Redondo street (known as the "Caudillo de Castilla" and founder of the JONS) which will be called El Valbanera street (ship that sank off the coast of Cuba in 1919, where 488 people died).
