Arrecife walls up a squat building in the La Vega neighborhood

After suffering two fires in the last 24 hours, the people who were staying there had vacated it.

Sealed occupied building in Arrecife

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has ordered that the accesses to the ground floor of the building located on Brasilia Street, corner of Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes, be walled up this Monday morning, where multiple fires had been recorded, the last ones this past weekend, and during the morning of this Monday. This building, until today occupied by several people of no known occupation, had become a source of serious nuisance for the neighbors in this neighborhood of La Vega, in the capital of Lanzarote.

The squatters vacated the building and several municipal workers from the Arrecife City Council, at the request of the mayor, have covered the ground floor of the building this Monday morning by welding the existing metal enclosure in this building, which has been a point where fires have been recorded continuously. The mayor, in view of the report by the Arrecife Local Police - whose officers had moved to the area this Sunday and this Monday after the new fires were recorded - ordered the Roads and Works personnel, under his direct direction, to urgently proceed during this Monday to weld the existing metal fences to guarantee security and prevent access to this unfinished building with a height of three floors.

The Local Police officers stated in their report that there were security problems in this building where the upper floors, which were frequented by the squatters until now, lack windows and exterior doors, which overlook busy streets with several residential buildings, a supermarket and semi-pedestrian areas in its surroundings, which are busy throughout the day. The mayor's office ordered the accesses to be walled up in the face of possible new risks, and assessing the police report.

Mayor Yonathan de León, after this new fire was recorded, went to the scene and assessed the adoption of preventive measures as a matter of urgency. For the extinction of the fire, the personnel of the Security and Emergency Consortium of the Cabildo of Lanzarote were counted on, who were assisted by agents of the Local Police and National Police.

In recent months, the mayor of Arrecife has also ordered the fencing and walling up, for security reasons, of other houses located on Cienfuegos Street, corner of Fajardo, in the city center, and on Peru Street, respectively, which were also properties frequented by squatters.
