The Arrecife City Council will urge the Government of the Canary Islands to award the Gold Medal of the Canary Islands 2026 to the San José Obrero Handball Club, in recognition of its fifty years of sports, social and cultural trajectory.

In a motion presented by the PSOE, the plenary of the Arrecife City Council has supported urging the Canary Islands Executive to grant this distinction to the Arrecife sports club known as Las Panteras. The club celebrated its fiftieth anniversary on February 10.

In a motion defended by the socialist councilor Roy González, athletes and representatives of the club attended the plenary to hear how this initiative was being debated. "Because a club with this history deserves official recognition. It has become a benchmark in Arrecife and all of Lanzarote," González added.

Along these lines, Vox councilor Eugenio Hernández praised the initiative and the club and reproached the municipal Government Group, led by the Popular Party and the Canarian Coalition, for not having been the ones who decided to bring that motion to the plenary.

Faced with this reproach, the current Councilor for Sports of Arrecife, Eli Merino, has defended that her Area has made different tributes to the team.

The San José Obrero Handball Club has already received other distinctions for its sports and social work, including the Recognition of Sports Merit from the Royal Spanish Handball Federation.
