The Arrecife City Council continues to take firm steps towards greater road safety in the municipality's educational environments. The Local Government Board, chaired by Mayor Yonathan de León, approved at an extraordinary meeting held this Friday the inter-administrative cooperation with the Department of Public Works of the Cabildo of Lanzarote for the transformation of Eugenio Dors street, located in the vicinity of the La Destila public school.
This action, driven by the initiative of the capital's mayor, will be planned and executed by the Insular Department of Public Works, led by councilor Jacobo Medina, as a complement to the Safe School Routes Plan being developed in Arrecife. The work, which already has a technical project and financial record, will allow the reconversion of Eugenio Dors street into a semi-pedestrian thoroughfare, on a single platform, with the aim of reinforcing the safety of the educational community.
The intervention will be carried out on the stretch between the intersections with La Inés and Manolo Millares streets, thus completing the road safety perimeter of the educational center, which already has a first phase completed on El Daute street. The La Destila school, which occupies a full block in the heart of the neighborhood of the same name, will thus see its entire urban environment protected.
Global plan for the transformation of Arrecife's urban image
The semi-pedestrianization of Eugenio Dors is part of a global plan to transform the urban image of Arrecife, promoted in phases by the municipal government group. In this regard, the action will be coordinated with the Insular Department of Public Works to be executed consecutively to the creation of the future eco-boulevard on Triana street, whose route will begin at the roundabout next to the Courthouse, on Vía Medular, and will connect with the section already planned between Eugenio Dors and Fajardo streets. These works are expected to be put out to tender during the first half of 2026.
Arrecife now has a fully implemented safe school route in the vicinity of the Nieves Toledo school, in the neighborhoods of El Lomo and Valterra. With the upcoming project in La Destila, continuity will be given to a safer and more accessible urban model, especially in school zones located in areas with high traffic density, as is the case in this enclave near El Reducto beach.
Mayor Yonathan de León, who also holds direct responsibility for the municipal Public Works Department, announced that during this second stage of his term, new actions will be undertaken on Triana, La Inés, and the second phase of Manolo Millares streets, between the roundabouts of the old municipal cemetery and the accesses to Antonio Zerolo school and IES Las Salinas.Likewise, the mayor announced that the urban transformation projects for the second phase of Manolo Millares street, between Guenia and the old cemetery, as well as for Triana street, which will reinforce road safety at the accesses to IES Las Salinas and CEIP Antonio Zerolo, have already been completed. In parallel, urban renewal projects are being finalized in the Argana Alta and Argana Baja neighborhoods, where one of the main actions will focus on Tajaraste Avenue, in the vicinity of CEIP Argana Alta.
