Arrecife plans to extend the urban transformation of Canalejas Street to La Plazuela

The Arrecife City Council plans to extend the transformation of Canalejas Street. The mayor has announced that they are working on new projects to continue with the renovation of the urban image, improve accessibility, increase shade areas and relaunch streets that have had life in the open commercial areas of the capital of Lanzarote.

Within the planning for this term, the mayor has pointed out that "just as the neighborhoods of Arrecife are being modernized, with a powerful municipal investment plan, it is desired to relaunch the Open Commercial area of Arrecife, modernizing the streets with the presence of traditional shops, located on the axes of Calle Real, Fajardo, Manolo Millares, and Canalejas, among other roads in the center." The mayor has already pointed out, in different statements to the media, that the Department of Public Works has several tenders underway to renovate streets that connect the neighborhoods with the city center.

Thus, within the planning for this term, the mayor has announced that they are "working jointly with the Public Works Area of the Cabildo to transform Canalejas Street, between the sections from the Agustín Espinosa Institute, and La Plazuela." An enclave near the El Almacén building, designed by César Manrique 50 years ago, and whose surrounding streets have been recently renovated with an action by the Department of Public Works of the first island institution.

Yonathan de León has emphasized that "the citizens have positively valued the urban transformation of a section of Canalejas Street, which has been renovated as a semi-pedestrian road, with outstanding vegetation, where it has been equipped with a new eco boulevard, with more than 30 jacaranda trees, within the beautification plans of Arrecife, and allows the walk between El Reducto beach, and the commercial area of Calle Real, and the hotel area of Charco de San Ginés."

The Arrecife City Council allocated a subsidy from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands for the execution of this first phase of Canalejas Street, within its Pima Climate Change Plan 2020 line with the amount of €100,434.19, included in the transforming project of Arrecife to the Integral Renovation project of Canalejas Street-Section between Coronel Bens Street and Avda. Mancomunidad.

The Arrecife City Council assigned that subsidized amount to the reconditioning of Canalejas Street in the section between Avenida Mancomunidad and Coronel Bens Street, up to the height of the Agustín Espinosa Institute, which has provided the area with its pedestrian transit, reinforcing accessibility and road viability along the entire street, as well as intersections with others.

Also, that subsidy was aimed at the creation of a low emission zone that improves air quality and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the reduction of noise levels, positively impacting the quality of life of residents and visitors of the municipality.

The Integral Renovation of Canalejas Street-Section between Coronel Bens Street and Avda. Mancomunidad was awarded to the company UTE CANALEJAS (U72878630) constituted by the companies (Hormigones Insulares, S.L. Horinsa, S.L. and Transportes Y Excavaciones Tiagua, with a total amount of 701,530 euros plus €49,107.11 in respect of IGIC (File number 16033/2022).
