Arrecife Waste Awareness Campaign

The Arrecife City Council wishes to stop the proliferation of debris spills in many places in the city. And it is that, it affirms that in recent times numerous debris dumps have also proliferated on the outskirts of Arrecife, where citizens and those responsible for domestic works deposit waste from works in unauthorized spaces, "spoiling" the image of the capital of Lanzarote.

Therefore, the Arrecife City Council, through the Department of Cleaning, will monitor compliance with municipal ordinances, where sanctions of up to 60,000 euros are foreseen for throwing this waste in unauthorized places.

The mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, accompanied by the Councilor for Cleaning, Roberto Herbón, and managers of the company Urbaser - concessionaire of the Municipal Cleaning Service - presented this Thursday, in the square of the San Francisco Javier neighborhood, an awareness initiative to put a stop to the lack of civic-mindedness of many citizens who throw their belongings on public roads or do not transfer the debris from their small works to the clean points enabled on the island.

This campaign, which will be disseminated through the media, has as its central message "!!! Your trash doesn't speak but it says a lot about you !!!" . The mayor has remarked that in recent months the cleaning service has been reinforced, intensifying in all neighborhoods, but she has stated that there are still citizens who find it difficult to put garbage bags in the containers, call the free service for removing belongings, or recycle waste by depositing it at the Clean Points.

"Every day our neighborhoods are cleaner and more cared for, with the resources that we allocate from the City Council," emphasized the first mayor, who also recalled at the presentation the important presence of teams of workers from the Social Employment Plan to clean the lots and public spaces. “We are working to have a cleaner, more cared for and more beautiful capital, and citizen civility makes it possible. Those who are uncivil will face the economic sanctions that are contemplated in the ordinances,” said Astrid Pérez.

Councilor Roberto Herbón has detailed that the City Council provides residents with a free collection service for belongings, and also a set of trays that, upon prior request, are transferred to the neighborhoods and areas so that residents can deposit inside the debris generated in the small works in many homes. Roberto Herbón recalls that renovation companies are obliged to remove and recycle this debris, but points out that there are also people who directly carry out their renovations in their homes and prefer to throw the debris in lots or on public roads rather than call to request a tray.

Always call 928 815 560

The Councilor for Cleaning has asked the population to memorize the telephone number 928 815 560. You must call there in advance to request the removal of belongings, and a tray, if works are planned that generate debris. "We have a free service that should always be requested and we will change that painful image that is observed in many streets of Arrecife with mattresses, appliances or furniture thrown on public roads, next to the garbage containers," Herbón sentenced.

The campaign foresees the installation of informative stickers on all containers - which have this telephone number for collecting belongings - where citizens are asked for "civility and responsibility". "Placing bags with waste inside is always better, and speaks well of the citizen. The opposite is known by another name", said Roberto Herbón in his speech.

At the presentation, the local authorities were accompanied by workers from the Municipal Cleaning Service dedicated to the collection of belongings, who carried out a simulation of the removal of mattresses and furniture found in that square in the square of the San Francisco Javier neighborhood.

Mayor Ástrid Pérez closed the presentation of this initiative stating that “the city is a space for coexistence that people share with respect, cleanliness and civility towards others and towards our streets, parks and squares”. "We want the citizens of Arrecife to get involved in working for civility to have a better horizon in good coexistence among all. If we all put in a grain of sand, and we are fully convinced that it will be so, we will achieve better progress. The cleanest city is the one in which each neighbor makes it less dirty every day,” remarked the first mayor.
