Inauguration of Pedro Alcántara Square

The space has renovated and accessible furniture with a single platform, in addition to having a novel sustainable urban drainage system

The mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, together with other members of the Municipal Corporation, inaugurated the renovated Plaza Pedro Alcántara this Thursday, located in the city center.

This new urban space, in which the Arrecife City Council has invested 374,469.62 euros, has renovated furniture and has become an accessible square without architectural barriers, thanks to the installation of the single platform.

The remodeling of Plaza Pedro Alcántara has also been important for being the first park or garden on the island to have sustainable urban drainage, where the new vegetation and existing trees will be watered with rainwater, which will be stored in a large cistern that is buried under the square.

The rainwater evacuation network mainly consists of three rain gardens or bioretention areas, and its function is to retain and filter the water, at a certain depth, and to evacuate the excess water that is produced.

The rain gardens will collect water contributions to three concave areas approximately 40 centimeters deep, with a drain at the bottom that leads the water to the cistern through inspection chambers. In addition, it should be noted that the cistern, once its maximum capacity is reached, will direct the effluent to the existing sanitation network through a collector.

"This Government group has been the first, since Cándido Reguera was mayor, to undertake rainwater works in the city, trying to solve the problem of flooding that the island usually suffers with the rains," concludes the mayor, Astrid Pérez.

A space for families to enjoy

"We responded to a historical demand from the residents, who saw how this area was abandoned to its fate by the last governments, and we decided to act and offer this space for families to enjoy," says the mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez.

This new Plaza Pedro Alcántara has become an open and modern environment, with the capacity to cover different uses and activities, with new shade spaces and new vegetation that beautifies the place.

"We have managed to recover a completely abandoned area, adapting it for all users and generating a new meeting place, this being one of the main objectives of the area that I lead," says the Councilor for Urban Planning, Eduardo Placeres.

It should be remembered that the landscape transformation of Plaza Pedro Alcántara has been carried out with the execution of the GCMP Resilient Landscapes project, which was the winner of the ideas competition since they carried out a technical study based on the landscape as a meeting point for crossed visions of gardening, agronomy, environmental sciences, architecture and urban planning.
