The campaign to clean the streets of Arrecife continues. In addition to garbage and rubble, the capital's City Council has removed 300 abandoned cars from public roads since last July.
The most common cause of these abandonments is usually the lack of interest and neglect of their owners, since in most cases they are old and defective cars that are of no use. "The good image and the guarantee of good living conditions for the municipality is the task of public representatives, but citizens must lend their collaboration," said Antonio Hernández, Councilor for the Local Police and First Deputy Mayor of Arrecife. "We at the City Council are making an effort, but a certain dose of civic responsibility is also demanded."
Abandoning a vehicle on public roads carries a financial penalty of between 300 and 600 euros, and as long as the vehicle is not deregistered by its owner, the circulation tax must be paid.
