The Arrecife City Council, through the Department of Public Works, has awarded the works to build the new rainwater network in a section of the Vía Medular and Puerto de Naos, an area that until now has been critical due to flooding during heavy rains. The works, which will begin in May, have been awarded for 1,378,430.94 euros. With this new investment, within the public works plan launched by Mayor Yonathan de León, the new rainwater network will be built in the section of the Vía Medular from the roundabout near the Valterra Health Center to the entrances to Puerto de Naos, next to the San Ginés Fishermen's Association.
This area originates from land reclaimed from the sea with the construction of the port area. There, the primitive Porto Naos dock is located, as indicated by the council in a statement. The Arrecife City Council has had the support of the Department of Public Works of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, led by Councilor Jacobo Medina, for the financing of this new work.
The mayor, Yonathan de León, and the island councilor of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, were this morning in the Puerto de Naos area, where they announced this new award that is part of the several phases that the City Council has underway to create a new rainwater network. As is known, the capital of Lanzarote "lacks a rainwater network in many of its roads and public spaces, and in times of rain the waters are evacuated through the sewage network".
Arrecife executes the rainwater network
Yonathan de León has detailed that this work on the Vía Medular is in addition to the phase, already under construction, to minimize flooding in the area around Cuatro Esquinas and Charco de San Ginés. For both works, the City Council has allocated nearly three million euros from the island plans, to which will be added upcoming tenders in the area around the Titerroy Health Center and Cruz Roka (Vía Medular roundabout) and the well-known Storm Tank, between Portugal and Argentina streets, in the La Vega neighborhood.
The island councilor of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, stressed that his Department offers collaboration and support to local corporations in the execution of these works, which, like the rainwater network, are of supra-municipal interest that will allow the evacuation of rainwater through a new network.
The mayor has emphasized that the city is preparing its rainwater network to minimize rainwater, but it is necessary for the Insular Water Council, an entity with exclusive responsibility for the ravines, to channel those existing north of the Argana Alta neighborhood, under the slopes of Montaña Mina and Zonzamas. These ravines are the main cause of the serious floods that have been recorded in Arrecife, such as the recent ones in this month of April, with more than 60 liters per square meter in just over an hour.
Improvement of public roads in the neighborhoods of Arrecife
The mayor, Yonathan de León, has detailed that, according to the deadlines established in the official tenders, throughout 2025 and the first half of 2026 there will be works in the subsoil in these areas of the city. The works focus on opening trenches and installing pipes, as well as rainwater collectors and evacuation of surface water by means of the arrangement of gullies at the edge of the road, along with the execution of the rainwater impulsion collector, in the central area of Cuatro Esquinas.
After these works, the replacement of the sidewalks and affected asphalt areas will proceed. The City Council has planned for the actions of the municipal resurfacing plan that affect these streets to begin after the completion of the canalizations in the subsoil.
