The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León (PP), has requested this Monday to the Island Water Council to channel the ravines on the outskirts of the city to avoid more floods like the ones that occurred last Saturday.
De León has appeared before the press on Escardillo street, in the Argana Alta neighborhood, one of the most affected, together with the Civil Protection coordinator, Marcos del Rosario, and the chief engineer of Public Works, Santiago Aristuri.
The mayor has pointed out that the situation in Arrecife was caused by the water that came down from Zonzamas and Montaña Mina and has defended that the channeling will be "the only way to prevent it from happening again", while highlighting that the competences over the ravines correspond to the island water councils.
For his part, Aristuri said that it is necessary to act in many areas, but particularly "upstream".
He recalled that years ago a work was done to channel the water, but that "we must continue acting" with other projects that slow down the water's speed and help "it arrive with fewer solids".
