The Arrecife City Council approved this Tuesday, with the vote in favor of the government group (CC/PNC-PSOE-PIL), the Popular group, Somos and Vecinos Unidos and the abstention of Ganemos and Ciudadanos, to erect a life-size sculpture as a tribute to Heraclio Niz, "El Pollo de Arrecife".
The motion, presented by the Coalición Canaria-Partido Nacionalista Canario (CC-PNC) group, raises the need for the capital city council to develop actions, as is the case, so that the work of figures "who proudly carried the name of their city", such as that of the well-known and popular policeman and fighter, do not fall into oblivion.
As stated by the spokesperson for the nationalist group, Samuel Martín: "It will soon be six years since his death and I think it is time to recognize Heraclio. Time to carry out an exercise of recognition and tribute to a man, one of our own, who ended up becoming an icon for all citizens".
It should also be remembered that El Pollo de Arrecife is perhaps the Canary Islander with the greatest presence in cinema, as his participation as an extra, and as an extra in close-ups with some function, "will not go unnoticed when the history of cinema in the Canary Islands is written".
In its proposal, the CC-PNC group requests that an artist be commissioned to create a life-size sculpture of Heraclio Niz, in uniform, "seeking to represent the approach of municipal agents to citizens". A sculpture that would be placed in the surroundings of the Boca del Muelle and the old Cabildo building, where he could easily be found.
Likewise, the possibility was also raised of extending this tribute by assigning the name of Heraclio Niz, "El Pollo de Arrecife", to a street or square in the city.
"As political leaders, we have a moral obligation to promote actions that allow us to remember a person who proudly carried the image of his city," stressed Samuel Martín.
