March 1, International Civil Protection Day
The Arrecife City Council congratulates all the volunteers this Saturday, March 1 on the International Civil Protection Day that is commemorated today. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, highlights on this day the important work carried out by the Civil Protection personnel, who constantly offer their time, dedication and professionalism to meet the needs of the capital of Lanzarote both in prevention and in assistance when different emergencies have been registered.
In this same line, the Councilor for Security and Emergencies, Area to which Civil Protection is attached, Kevin Cortes, is pleased with the great team of volunteers that make up the Civil Protection Group of Arrecife, to whom continuous training is constantly being offered, participating in courses or intervention drills, such as the last one held a few days ago in the area of the Islote del Francés.
This March 1st commemorates International Civil Protection Day, a date dedicated to organizations that work in favor of the population. On a day like today, in 1972, the International Civil Protection Organization (ICPO) was established, which is recognized throughout the world. The objectives of the ICPO are:
-Develop national structures to prevent and reduce disasters.
-Protect people and their property from natural and man-made phenomena.
-Provide assistance for the recovery from the immediate effects of disasters.
Civil protection or civil defense offers a set of activities, measures and actions aimed at supporting populations when vulnerable situations are recorded.
The mayor and the councilor of the Area appreciate "the work of the volunteers that the capital of Lanzarote has. Some troops who are dedicated to helping and working for citizens without profit. In addition to offering assistance to the population of Arrecife, they support reinforcements in other municipalities in security plans."
They are also involved in the collection of humanitarian aid, as happened at the end of last year when two containers of humanitarian aid were sent to those affected by the Dana, in Valencian lands, which left from the Civil Protection warehouse in Arrecife.
Kevin Cortés recalled that "during this 2025 the means and equipment of Civil Protection will be increased, after the recent tenders, and values the unconditional work carried out by these troops in mass events, as we are seeing in these two weeks of carnival in the capital of Lanzarote, where their presence has been very valuable."
The group has several vehicles, plus the five that will be incorporated during this 2025, equipped with the necessary tools for fire extinguishing, land intervention and sanitary logistical support. Last fall they premiered several electric motorcycles to their fleet.
The Municipal Government of Arrecife, led by Mayor Yonathan de León, is also "redoubling the improvements in the facilities of Civil Protection."
