The City Council of Arrecife has installed twelve new defibrillators in the municipal sports facilities owned by the City Council.

The mayor, Yonathan de León, and the Sports councilor, Eli Merino, presented on Thursday morning at the facilities of the renovated Agapito Reyes Viera municipal football field, in the Altavista neighborhood, of the new semi-automatic external defibrillators (DESA) acquired by the Sports Council for their presence in the sports facilities of the neighborhoods of Argana Alta, Titerroy, Las Salinas, La Destila, Valterra and Altavista ( Centro Deportivo Puerto del Arrecife) to which will be added, after the execution of the modernization works, the Tinasoria neighborhood and the new sports and leisure facilities that are being built in San Francisco Javier, near the Vía Medular.

All these DESA have GPS and are communicated with 112 through the activation of the emergency button. These new DESA are located in the municipal football fields, covered courts, sports pavilions, and in the Centro Puerto del Arrecife where the municipal swimming pools are located.

Along with these points, the municipal sports facilities of the City Council will also have a resuscitator bag for immediate interventions if cardiorespiratory arrests were registered and resuscitation exercises had to be activated.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and the Councilor for Sports and spokesperson for the PP, Eli Merino, have detailed that having these new equipment in all sports facilities will allow to save human lives due to the rapid response. The mayor detailed that from now on (with the installations completed in these days) Arrecife will have a wide network of DESA that will reinforce the existing ones on El Reducto beach, with a blue flag and a human team of lifeguards every day of the year, plus the mobile defibrillators with which teams from the Local Police and Civil Protection are equipped.

Yonathan de León emphasized that "from now on we offer more public means to allocate them to prevent and treat sudden cardiac arrests in places where sporting events are held, and many people can attend". Both the Local Police and Civil Protection personnel are already equipped with semi-automatic defibrillators that are carried in the vehicles.

Training in resuscitation techniques to the clubs and sports monitors

Councilwoman Eli Merino stressed that the Department of Sports has planned "many training sessions and workshops aimed at sports clubs, and municipal monitors, so that they learn resuscitation techniques, and become familiar with the proper use of these semi-automatic external defibrillators". These Arrecife defibrillators incorporate an important novelty: it generates a quick call with a button to the 112 room.

Eli Merino remarked that "they have been located in strategic places, as well as we will train the clubs, directors and monitors in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques so that, if they had to intervene, they know how to use these equipment that we are installing in all the sports facilities of the Arrecife City Council".

During the presentation made this Thursday before the media, by the technician of the installing company, it has been recalled that “in a world where cardiovascular diseases become among the main causes of mortality, the deployment of cardioprotected zones, as the Arrecife City Council is carrying out, allows to guarantee a rapid and effective response to cardiac emergencies, with the aim of reducing mortality due to cardiac arrest".

Importance of Cardioprotection

Cardioprotection is essential to increase the chances of survival in cases of cardiac arrest. Every minute that passes without treatment significantly reduces the chances of successful resuscitation. Therefore, having immediate resources and trained personnel is crucial to saving lives.
