The Canary Islands School of Health and Social Services (ESSSCAN) and the Canary Islands Patient School of the Canary Islands Health Service, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, held this Wednesday in Lanzarote the course Trainer of trainers of the Canary Islands Patient School.

This initiative, developed in the Arrecife Youth Center, was attended by professionals from the Management of Health Services of the Lanzarote Health Area and active patients from the island.

The course was presented by the director of ESSSCAN, José Montelongo, and the coordinator of the Canary Islands Patient School, Daniel López. In the development of this initiative, the organization of training workshops and different learning models, as well as tools to improve communication within groups and apply educational didactics for health professionals, were addressed.

On the other hand, during the session practical cases based on real situations were presented, allowing attendees, mostly nurses and patients, to familiarize themselves with the basic principles of training.

During the course, the director of ESSSCAN, José Montelongo, recalled that "the mission of this organization is to respond to the training needs that exist in the health and social fields of the Canary Islands and promote the training and recycling of professionals linked to these sectors".

For his part, the coordinator of the Canary Islands Patient School, Daniel López, highlighted "the institution's commitment to training active patients to become trainers, under the guidance and supervision of health professionals, and to improve the pedagogical skills of trainers".

Both agreed on the importance of bringing training directly to where it is needed, as a key element for information to reach patients and families in a clear and accessible way.

Canary Islands Patient School

The Canary Islands Patient School is an initiative of the SCS in which the patients themselves, advised by health professionals, guide other patients with the same pathology, exchanging experiences and guiding and helping them about their health process.

It maintains a firm commitment to education among equals, through workshops, which become dynamic and participatory meetings that allow caregivers, family members and patients to learn techniques and skills to properly manage the disease. Likewise, the workshops provide tools to improve the quality of life and overcome the difficulties experienced from a physical, psychological and social point of view. This process is supervised at all times by a health professional who acts as an observer.
