An Environment worker has reported the Fisheries Councilor Marcos Páez for assault. According to Jeremías Cabrera, on Sunday afternoon, he met the councilor in the Puerto Naos bar in Arrecife, where they are usually located. "He had never addressed me. I felt grabbed from behind and when I turned around I saw it was him. He threw me to the ground and started punching me", says Jeremías Cabrera in reference to the brawl. This Monday he went with the medical report and his lawyer to the National Police to file a complaint.
According to the alleged victim, the events happened without a word. "The councilor was the one who took the action because I didn't provoke him. I think the man came with all the people from La Graciosa from the Feaga fair and got emboldened." Jeremías assures that several people who were in the bar had to lift him off. This Monday he appeared in the emergency room. "He didn't do much to me but I have a small hemorrhage in my eye according to the doctor."
The discrepancies between this Environment guard and the councilor reached their peak when the worker reported the head of the area for illegal shellfish harvesting. A complaint that was finally dismissed. But Jeremías is surprised by his reaction because "the other times he had never messed with me. At least not directly, although it is true that he had sent me messages under the table." The guard also complains because he believes that the councilor acts with impunity. "The other time I reported other people from the Environment area, they were released because the Cabildo did not provide me with a lawyer", he says.
Apparently and according to Jeremías, Marcos Páez has also filed a complaint, however the Fisheries Councilor has not yet spoken.
Political repercussion
The PSC has rushed to demand the president of the Cabildo the "immediate and forceful dismissal" of Marcos Páez. The Lanzarote socialists consider it "indecent" that the President keeps the Fisheries Councilor in his position, "absolutely unworthy of holding public office." In this sense, the PSC of Lanzarote also demands that the party of the alleged aggressor, Coalición Canaria, "put an end to this type of practice that is totally unacceptable in a civilized society like ours".
From the Socialist Party they advise the president of the Cabildo that "instead of using public money to pay for personal promotion campaigns by putting jackets on children, she should pay a little more attention to the councilors of her government group, who by harassing officials at work - in reference to Higinio Hernández - and assaulting guards, do little to improve her deteriorated public image".
