Agreed on "new measures" against the burning of containers: "We are not going to give clues to guarantee their effectiveness"

The Island Security Board met this Wednesday to address this problem. So far this year, 140 containers have burned on the island, compared to 40 in the same period of 2021.

Island Security Board Meeting Regarding Container Burning on the Island

The Plenary Hall of the Cabildo hosted this Wednesday a new Island Security Board to address the problem of container burning, which has increased this year "considerably" compared to the previous one. "While the measures carried out were analyzed, new actions were agreed upon, about which we are not going to give clues, obviously, to guarantee their effectiveness," said the Security Councilor, Marcos Bergaz.

"The ultimate shared goal is that they give results and can put an end to behaviors that are not only uncivil, but also constitute crimes and that, in addition, alter the tranquility of the neighbors and cause damage to common and private property," he added.

The meeting was attended by the General State Administration, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the seven municipalities of the island, the Security Consortium and the security forces, including the Civil Guard, National Police and Local Police, in a session chaired by the island director of the General State Administration, Juan Ramón Pérez Borges, together with Bergaz himself.

According to statements from the Cabildo, the meeting continued another previous one held two weeks ago, and they have shared "the actions undertaken to curb the increase in containers set on fire so far this year, going from 40 in the first semester of 2021, to a total of 140 so far this year."

"The increase has led to various coordination meetings to address this issue, as well as the implementation of reinforcement measures, both material and human, to identify those responsible and make them available to justice, which has resulted in the arrest of five people allegedly responsible for these behaviors so far this year," Bergaz recalled.

"These behaviors are intolerable, hence, along with awareness campaigns, social reproach against these behaviors and the police and justice action to put an end to them is also appropriate," he concluded.
