AC condemns the murders of two women due to gender violence in the Canary Islands and demands "effective" measures

Citizen Alternative has sent a statement condemning the two murders due to gender violence committed in the Canary Islands in less than a week. The assembly formation has also expressed its "solidarity with the families and environments of the victims" and demands "effective" measures against gender violence.

The organization considers "essential the commitment of public administrations and the set of social agents to eradicate a phenomenon that reveals the deep inequality still characteristic of our society" and, in this sense, believes that "the Canarian public administration and the State government must change their way of dealing with gender violence."

"The procedures followed so far do not prevent the murder of women, the destruction of their lives and their families from continuing," they point out from Citizen Alternative, from where they also see "essential the increase in resources, the strengthening of public services so that they are capable of stopping sexist terrorism and the incorporation of city councils into a systematic prevention plan. "Because without equality plans based on local reality it is not possible to face this collective tragedy," they add.

"Resounding" rejection in the streets

In the opinion of Alternativa Ciudadana, "the necessary improvement in the institutional response to gender violence requires effective measures, such as increased funding, to allow the development and consolidation of the prevention, care and protection system for women and minor victims, as well as a firm commitment to guaranteeing permanent and continuous training in egalitarian values and affective-sexual education in the educational system, given that education constitutes an essential space for awareness and prevention."

Alternativa Ciudadana invites citizens "to continue expressing their rejection with the cry of 'Not one less', as it has spread throughout the world as an expression of awareness of its disastrous effects and to demand coherent actions from public administrations." "At a time when the struggle of women for their dignity and their rights is recognized as an essential factor in the real democratization of society, it is time for the rejection of sexist violence to be expressed resoundingly in the streets", concludes the formation.
