A new shockwave treatment is applied to 400 patients at the General Hospital

The Rehabilitation Service of the General Hospital of Lanzarote has a shock wave generator for two years. The application of this therapy is carried out by four doctors specialized in rehabilitation techniques and the patients are selected and grouped by pathologies.

The most frequently treated pathologies are enthesopathies (epicondylitis or tennis elbow, epitrochleitis or golfer's elbow, patellar tendinitis, plantar fasciitis secondary to spurs, rotator cuff tendinopathy, Achilles tendinitis) and periarticular calcifications, especially those of the shoulder. The technique requires focusing on the point of greatest pain in the region to be treated.

For some time, high-energy shock waves have been used in the treatment of kidney stones, known as lithotripsy, to break kidney stones, and for about five years, medium and low energy ones have been used in the world of musculoskeletal injuries.

Hydrotherapy

The Rehabilitation service of the General Hospital of Lanzarote also has, for a few months, a Hübbard tank, which is a therapeutic tool that falls within the hydrotherapy techniques. It is like a "jacuzzi" in the shape of a butterfly in which the patient is introduced so that, with the effect of the water, the action of the force of gravity is eliminated. This allows the joint segments that are worked to be less painful when mobilizing them.

Another effect is to facilitate muscle strengthening by performing a resistance to movement. It also provides great psychological benefits to the patient and is also used, both in adults and children, in the treatment of spasticity, since immersion in warm water decreases the increase in muscle tone of the affected areas.
