"Intensive pruning not only causes the spread of the red palm weevil but also alters the natural beauty of the palm tree, whose disappearance would cause irreparable landscape damage", explains the Minister of Territorial Policy and Environment, Carlos Espino, referring to the advice offered in the information leaflet published by the Cabildo to prevent the red palm weevil on the island.
In total, 4,000 leaflets will be distributed among the island's seven town councils and agricultural associations. In addition to the ban on felling palm trees, it is reminded of the obligation to destroy those affected by the plague in a controlled manner, provided that the cut leaves are wrapped in plastic. Other prevention measures include disinfecting transport trucks and tools used, chopping the trunk and protected transport to the landfill. All these provisions will have to be coordinated by the Area of Territorial Policy and Environment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
This leaflet is part of a more general campaign whose slogan reads "Safeguarding our landscape is everyone's business".
