Lack of alternatives or greater speed are some of the reasons that push locals to use the car over the bus.

Lanzarote is the Canary Island where the car is most used for regular commutes. This is according to the Archipelago's Survey of Socioeconomic Habits and Confidence, in the area of Mobility, by the Canary Institute of Statistics.

In total, 81.5% of those surveyed in Lanzarote indicated that the private vehicle is their usual means of transport. Residents of the island of volcanoes use the private car above the Canary Islands average (69%) and well above the capital islands: Tenerife registers 69.3% and Gran Canaria, 64.4%.

Trailing in Public Transportation Use

In contrast, the use of public transport on the island, which does not include taxi data, is the lowest in the Canary Islands and below the regional average (38%). With these figures, only two out of ten Lanzarote residents use the bus to travel regularly or in combination with a private vehicle.

La Gomera is the only island with worse data than Lanzarote when it comes to opting for public transportation. There, only 16.5% of the population chooses to get around by bus.

Meanwhile, taxis are used by 5.4% of the island's population, above the Canary Islands average (4.2%), and only behind Gran Canaria (2.4%).

Across the archipelago, by sex, men use private transport more (62.4%) than women (59.8%), who use it slightly less.

Convenience and lack of alternatives drive car use

Most respondents argue that they choose private transport for their regular commutes due to convenience (49.5%). At the same time, secondly, the Canary Island population opts for private vehicles due to a lack of alternatives (35.4%) and to reduce travel time (34.7%). To a lesser extent, this decision is influenced by price (13.9%), service frequency (7.3%), and safety (6.6%).
