The Titerroy Neighborhood Association has sent a statement to denounce the increase in cockroaches and the presence of rats in the neighborhood "due to lack of fumigation."
The group claims to have received complaints from neighbors reporting that "the City Council has not carried out campaigns against rats and cockroaches in the neighborhood for more than two years." "Residents say they cannot have any doors or windows open to ventilate their homes because they are filled with cockroaches," says the Titerroy Neighborhood Association, which adds that they also fear that a rat may sneak in.
"The situation is increasingly difficult. Cockroaches appear in the doorway, on the stairs, in the apartments, and in the shops on the ground floor. You also see them running down the street," continues the neighborhood group, which states that the Councilor for Health "is aware of the situation, but does not respond to the letters sent and has not met" with them for months.
"The arrival of heat has generated even greater discomfort," according to the Titerroy Neighborhood Association. "There are residents who cannot open the window either at night or during the day. The mosquitoes that multiply due to the garbage get into the houses and are very annoying. Many residents are fed up with this situation," he adds.
To this, he points out that "the bugs that come out of the trees are added, which fall on top of the neighbors, according to the neighbors due to lack of maintenance of the same." "Residents of Alcalde Lorenzo Cabrera Street complain about not being able to look out onto the roofs because the trees prevent them from doing so," says the group, which indicates that "the same thing happens on La Pinta Street, where weeds grow without any type of control." Likewise, he affirms that the residents of the area also denounce that the leaves of the palm trees fall onto the road.
"Lack of day-to-day maintenance"
On the other hand, the residents express "lack of day-to-day maintenance in the neighborhood." In this regard, the Titerroy Neighborhood Association says that, in the meeting of spokespersons held last month, "a dossier of 34 pages was delivered, accompanied by images, claiming the neighborhood demands." However, he affirms that to date the City Council "has not done anything to address the complaints of the residents."
The neighborhood group denounces "the lack of maintenance of the urban furniture in the neighborhood, the lack of bins" and "the large potholes", which it considers to be "a great danger for vehicles." "For the residents, the amount of money that the City Council pays to the companies responsible for garbage collection and maintenance of green areas is a lot, because a fortune is paid, but no type of result is seen," adds the association.
And it is that, he affirms that the residents of the houses of Juan Salazar Ortiz have addressed the association "to denounce the lack of maintenance of the gardens." "They have been without sand in these gardens for years, and more and more Canary Island palm trees are dying," he says.
A "bad image" of parks and gardens
In the opinion of the neighborhood group, "the lack of maintenance suffered by the city's parks and gardens" translates "into a bad image of the urban landscape and causes problems on public roads." "Residents denounce that this neglect has been going on for a long time. With the arrival of high temperatures, greater care of the city's green areas is essential so that they resist the change of season and are in optimal conditions, in addition to being an essential asset that benefits the health of citizens," he adds.
For the Titerroy Neighborhood Association, "one of the problems that must be solved is the pruning of the branches of the trees, since adequate maintenance is not being carried out and, even, they get inside some homes, as is the case in the neighborhood."
"We have always defended the need to protect our environment, so we cannot allow parks and gardens to be neglected or situations such as empty tree pits to remain and have not been restored. Having well-maintained parks and gardens provides a multitude of advantages to the population, from issues such as improving the city's landscape to others such as benefits for the mood of the citizens themselves," he indicates.
Likewise, the group explains that the Councilor for Works and Cleaning, Roberto Herbón, informed them that throughout this week the waterfall of the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Park, which had been "out of operation for years," would be provided with plants and the repair of the stairs of said park, "which the residents have been demanding for years." However, the association also demands that the staircase of said park, the one that faces Tinamala Street, be equipped with a handrail.
From the Titerroy Neighborhood Association, they make a call "on the great importance of parks and gardens, green spaces that constitute the lungs of the city, which represents an important benefit for cities from an environmental point of view."
