Tías pays tribute to Caridad Cejas Machín on the International Day of Rural Women

The City Council wanted to recognize "the invaluable contribution of rural women to the development of the towns" and especially of this neighbor of La Asomada, who at 82 years old continues to sow her land

The City Council of Tías has celebrated the International Day of Rural Women recognizing "the invaluable contribution of rural women to the development of the towns" and especially of Caridad Cejas Machín, a resident of La Asmoada.

"The women of Tías, and the women of the countryside and the sea in general, have a lot to tell. And we have a lot to be thankful for.  They are the basis of all the families in the municipality, they are the pillar of the towns. Their work is invisible and unpaid", says the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz.

"Caridad Cejas Machín is one of these strong and empowered women. Perhaps without knowing it, Caridad gives us vitality, capacity and strength. She sows her land with products that then reach the table of her loved ones. She cooks with what the land gives her. She does not forget the hens, she feeds the goats, and she does not miss the opportunity to toast grains and make herself the gofio that she keeps in her kitchen and gives to her relatives", adds the first mayor of Tías.

At 82 years old, Caridad "continues to get up when it is not yet dawn to start a day with the freshness of La Asomada, looking straight at the sea and the mountains, planting rows of onions and picking carnations near the house where she grew up", Cruz points out.

"Women like Caridad Cejas reconcile us with life and with the land, with the planet", continues the mayor, who affirms that "it is an honor to make this official recognition".
