The rental price accounted for almost 60% of the gross income of the Canary Islanders

The percentage of the Canary Islands was higher than the state average, which was 51.5%, although it was not among the highest in Spain

In 2020, the average rental price in Spain was 980 euros per month, which represents 51.5% of the gross monthly income of tenants, according to a report by the pisos.com real estate portal. In that same report, it establishes that in the case of the Canary Islands, rent represents 57.4% of income.

That 51.5% at the state level represents an increase of almost two points compared to the previous year, when the average rent was 966 euros, and the average gross salary was slightly higher, at 1,954 euros per month.

Despite these state parameters in 2020, there were Autonomous Communities that exceeded that figure, such as the Balearic Islands, where paying rent in 2020 represented 82.8% of the salary. Madrid was also above that percentage, with 69.6%, as was Catalonia, with 63.5% of the average gross salary, the Canary Islands, 57.4%, and Andalusia, 53%.

On the other side of the coin, the rental price in Extremadura only represented 30.3% of the salary, and in Asturias, 31.3%.

The director of Studies at pisos.com, Ferrán Font, pointed out that this imbalance between communities shows "the disproportion between salaries and the cost of housing" in a large part of Spain.
