The municipality of San Bartolomé was the setting on Saturday night for the Alexis Tejera Awards ceremony, which in its first edition have distinguished the work carried out by the Palliative Care Unit of the Lanzarote Health Area in the category of Social Welfare and Benjamín Nieves Delgado in the category of Educational Work. Orlando Suárez Curbelo, Áurea Mauri Cadavieco, Pedro Domingo Martín Hernández, Rosa María Mesa García and Domingo Corujo Gil have been recognized as historical socialists.

The meeting included speeches by the Secretary of Organization of the PSOE Canarias, Nira Fierro, the island's general secretary, María Dolores Corujo, the secretary of the Local Group, Raúl de León, Alexis Tejera's wife, Marta Sarmiento, and the mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, surrounded by representatives of the Party in various local institutions, militants, supporters, residents of the municipality, family and friends.

The event began with the screening of a video that recalled Alexis's political career from its beginnings, when, still very young, he identified with the values of the PSOE in coherence with the firmest defense of social justice.

In his speech, Raúl de León, who served as master of ceremonies, thanked the involvement of each of the men and women who have made it possible for these awards to be a reality, as well as the presence at the event of so many people who, in one way or another, wanted to join this tribute.

In this sense, Marta Sarmiento, highlighted the great work carried out by the awarded people and entities, conveying the most sincere gratitude of her family to the Socialist Group of San Bartolomé for this initiative.

Next, the general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, took the floor, who in an emotional speech recalled how much Alexis Tejera did for San Bartolomé and for the PSOE. At this point, she emphasized that both the Palliative Care Unit of the Lanzarote Health Area and Benjamín Nieves symbolize those values for which the young mayor fought so hard, always in favor of people's well-being.

Nira Fierro, for her part, highlighted the work carried out by the Socialist Group of San Bartolomé and its determination in the establishment of these awards that bear the name of who was also her party colleague since both began their political career under the PSOE banner.

The event was closed by Tejera's successor at the head of the City Council of San Bartolomé and member of the Local Executive of the PSOE, Isidro Pérez. In his words, he highlighted how much Alexis has meant in all areas of his life, in the political and personal, and stressed the enormous responsibility that the opportunity to manage public policies entails, "always under the maxim of the ethics of care."

The Alexis Tejera Awards are born from the affection of the Socialist Group of San Bartolomé to their colleague and friend. These awards aim to consolidate themselves as a symbol through which to perpetuate the memory and respect for this beloved mayor, keeping his memory alive.
