The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, on behalf of the corporation, visited Domitila Padrón Bermúdez this Wednesday at noon to celebrate her centenary as she turns 100 years old. Domitila Padrón, a resident of Mácher, was recognized in 2020 by the City Council as Rural Woman of the Year on the International Day of Rural Women and "is characterized by her vitality and constant smile," reveals the council.
José Juan Cruz exchanged impressions with the birthday girl and some of her relatives, as well as the parish priest and some residents of Mácher, who wanted to come to her house to congratulate her and share the celebration. The mayor recalled the award ceremony as Rural Woman in 2020, when Domitila spoke the following words read from a text written in her own handwriting:
"[...] In this long life, all I have done is work and work. I have seen years of drought, hunger, migration. I have seen republic, dictatorship, democracy pass. I have experienced an epidemic not as strange as this one [...] I pray that this passes soon and to the politicians, that they unite. I end by thanking the City Council for this opportunity, for giving me this tribute. Thanks to the family and the neighbors of my town of Mácher."
Domitila Padrón has dedicated her whole life to the house, her family and the countryside. Her parents, Marcial Padrón Medina and Carmen Bermúdez Mesa. Her husband, Juan Viña Hernández. Her children, María Imperio Viña Padrón and Rogelio Viña Padrón.
As the mayor, José Juan Cruz, recalls, "her life has been work and work, years of drought, hunger, migration... Her adolescence and youth coincide with the hard times of the civil war, years of long droughts. She lived closely the hunger, suffered the emigration of parents and siblings first to Gran Canaria and later to Uruguay. Domitila's wisdom comes from her joy and enthusiasm for life and for the land. Congratulations."
