The neighbor from Tías, Guillermina Rodríguez Cruz, known as Nina, has been distinguished as Rural Woman 2023 this Monday by the City Council. The woman, a native of Conil, has received this tribute on the occasion of the International Day of Rural Women established by the United Nations every October 15.
The Tías City Council, governed by PSOE and Unidas Sí Podemos, held this Monday the act of recognition of a woman from the municipality, which in this edition has been led by Guillermina Rodríguez.
The event, chaired by the mayor and the first deputy mayor, José Juan Cruz and Nicolás Saavedra, was attended by numerous family members and friends of Guillermina Rodríguez (Nina), who was accompanied by her children Rafael, Juana Teresa and Julia, and some of her grandchildren. During the tribute, a video of Guillermina in Conil was shown and she was presented with a diploma, an image and a bouquet of flowers.
José Juan Cruz stated that "the United Nations Organization and the Tías City Council want to make visible and publicly recognize the effort and work of these women who care for their homes, who till the land and plant seeds that feed entire nations."
Every year, since 2019, the Tías City Council recognizes the work of a woman from the municipality related to the primary sector. So far, Caridad Cejas, from La Asomada, Domitila Padrón, from Mácher, Otilia Rodríguez, from La Tiñosa, Isabel Delgado, from Tías, and in 2023, Guillermina Rodríguez, a native of Conil, have been recognized.
Guillermina Rodríguez Cruz, daughter of Rafael and Teresa, was born on February 11, 1927 and together with her five siblings, she collaborated from a very early age in the chores of the house and the field. From a young age she went to the lands to plant onions, pick tomatoes or sow grains, while at home she prepared porretos and everything that was necessary.
As indicated in the formal ceremony, "as a child she also had the essential curiosity to attend classes and acquire knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic; and she soon began to knit, make rosettes or embroider, in addition to making delicious mimos, shortbreads or sponge cakes."
"Her relatives say that Guillermina likes company and does not take a minute to offer them a coffee. At 96 years old, she leans on the arm of her loved ones to take a short walk around her house and enjoy the most pleasant moments of the day. Her children are Rafael, Juana Teresa and Julia; and she has seven grandchildren. Women like Guillermina reconcile us with life and with the land."
