The custom of embalming the deceased with the aim of trying to preserve the bodies after death has been practiced in many cultures throughout history. That is the starting point of the studies of the 250 experts who will debate and discuss their respective advances. The World Congress on Mummies is considered a type of scientific meeting very conducive for anthropologists, archaeologists, curators, ethnologists, geneticists, paleoparasitologists, paleozoologists to show and discuss the progress made in their different fields of study in relation to mummification.
During the week of February 19 to 24, the Villa de Teguise hosts this seminar where scientists from more than 30 countries share their research related to all aspects related to mummified remains and funeral rituals analyzed from different scientific disciplines.
Thus, the first session of the Congress, one day after it was inaugurated, was dedicated to funerary archaeology. On Tuesday, the discussion focused on the conservation of these mummified remains and the problems associated with their exhibition in the
History Museums around the world.
On Wednesday, for its part, different mummies found in various parts of the world were studied, such as the one found in the Altamira Cave in Sierra Gorda in Mexico or those found in the Andes Mountains.
Thursday, however, was dedicated to the application of new technologies to these human remains, which in many cases are thousands of years old. Thus, the analysis of hair, DNA or computerized imaging was discussed.
On Friday, experts analyze the methods of mummification in animals or the mummies "of subadults".
