The Molina Orosa Hospital celebrates its first open day

The 'Sunflowers and Butterflies' initiative offers educational care to hospitalized children to guarantee their comprehensive development

The Hospital Classroom of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital recently hosted the first open days of the hospital classrooms with the aim of publicizing the organization and operation of the hospital classrooms. This event has been promoted by the General Directorate of Educational Planning, Inclusion and Innovation of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports.

The Days called Sunflowers and butterflies, which will take place in the hospital classrooms of the Canary Islands, aim to publicize the educational and support work carried out in the hospital classrooms.

These spaces of the Ministry of Education integrated in the health field, offer educational care to children hospitalized due to illness and provide a response that guarantees comprehensive development together with their families and that facilitates reincorporation to the school after recovery and hospital discharge.

Health, Education and associations

The Days brought together in the hospital classroom the professionals of the Pediatrics ward, members of the associations that regularly collaborate with the Molina Orosa such as Pequeño Valiente, Cruz Roja, Asociación de Familias Oncohematológicas de Lanzarote (Afol), Perpetuarte, Adislan, Asociación Acompañar and representatives of the educational field headed by Josefa Rodríguez, coordinator of the Area of Specific Needs of Educational Support of the General Directorate of Educational Planning, and Carmen Pellón, island director of Education.

During this first open day, the teacher of the Molina Orosa, Mónica Alonso, explained the work she undertakes, day by day, in the classroom with the students and with the families who are in a situation of fragility in the face of a process of illness and hospitalization. In her presentation, Alonso defined the hospital classroom as an inspiring, educational, creative and affective environment, in order to generate humanistic and humanizing learning. "Working with children who are hospitalized requires an environment of trust, listening and respect, as well as joy and accompaniment," she said.

The Conference also included the participation of Calixto Herrera, coordinator of the Caterpillars and butterflies Project of colors on the desks of our school, of the General Directorate of Educational Planning, Inclusion and Innovation. His presentation on How to act in the face of adverse situations offered some essential guidelines on how to operate in scenarios of high emotional density and how to support the youngest in times of crisis, vulnerability and grief.

Hospital classroom projects

The hospital classroom of the Molina Orosa has integrated the Alternative and Augmentative Communication Systems and Technical Aids for access to the Curriculum in a hospital environment.

It develops several projects such as the School Radio, the Childhood and our elders Project: A journey through life and maintains collaborations with the University of La Laguna with which they participate in the inclusive proposal of the COEDU-IN Digital Literacy and STEAM in Early Ages project. With the Fernando Estévez Higher School of Art and Design of Tenerife, he works on the project Creating narrative and emotional experiences and preventive stories and with the Pancho Lasso School of Art of Arrecife, he has recorded the video clip Hospitalized child in Lanzarote, in addition, he collaborates with different educational centers, associations and other hospitals.
