The organization makes a "quite positive" assessment after almost a month of events at the Sociedad Democracia

Closing Ceremony of the Anniversary Events of the Mercedes Medina Association

The Mercedes Medina Díaz association makes a “quite positive” assessment of all the actions that have been carried out to celebrate its first decade.

The AMMD 10th Anniversary book, which has been published for this purpose and includes the activities carried out  by this Association, has had a “great acceptance both in the way it is presented and in its content”. The publication has been complemented “with a temporary exhibition of the posters of events carried out by the institution” and which has remained open from October 28 to November 20 at the Sociedad Democracia in Arrecife.

The association has made an effort to bring to Lanzarote  the leading figures in Education, Health, Geography, History and the Canary Islands Academies of Sciences and Language. José Juan Romero, teacher and journalist, highlighted “in keeping alive the memory of a great teacher  who worked in difficult times in the middle of the last century in Lanzarote, to attract women to the teaching profession”. The Rector of the ULPGC, Don Lluís Serra MAjem,  made a conclusive diagnosis of the “lessons learned and reflections on the pandemic in the Canary Islands”, who is considered “as one of the most important scientists in the world”.

For his part, the professor of Modern History and former Rector of the ULPGC, Manuel Lobo Cabrera brought us closer to the inextricable relationship of “Canary Islands and the sea”. The presidents of the Canary Islands Academies of Language and Science, Don Humberto Hernández  Hernández and Don José Méndez Pérez, respectively, explained “the important role that Canarian knowledge contributes to society”.

As a matter of strict topicality, there was a presentation  “The eruption of September 2021 in Cumbre Vieja, continuity of the recent historical volcanism of the Canary Islands” by the doctor in Geography and expert in Volcanology Don Alex Hansen Machín, who made “an extraordinary tour of  the recent and historical volcanoes of the Canary Islands, with a specific stop on the island of La Palma”.

The commemorative events ended with “a stellar musical performance” by the students of the Insular Center for Musical Education of Lanzarote (CIEM) directed by Professor José Manuel Hernández Álvaro. Subsequently, as a reminder of the anniversary, a tohio by the artisan Don Juan Jesús Brito was given to the CIEM, to the Sociedad Democracia for its exceptional welcome and to the Lanzarote Teachers' Center for its help in dissemination.

After the musical performance, “the solidarity piggy bank with La Palma” was collected, made available in all the events held on the anniversary, for shipment to students from educational centers most affected by the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
