The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has performed more than 9,000 surgical interventions throughout this year and exceeds by eleven percent the activity registered in the operating rooms during 2021.

The surgical team of Molina Orosa has performed a total of 9,381 interventions until the month of November, of which 2,309, about 25 percent of them correspond to general surgery procedures. In second place are those performed by the ophthalmology service, which total 1,724 interventions.

For its part, the operations carried out by the dermatology team total 1,241 throughout the year, while traumatology performed 1,078. These specialties are followed by activities related to urology and obstetrics, in addition to the interventions performed by the Pain Unit, which total 577 throughout this year.

Of the total surgical activities at Molina Orosa, 1,131, just over twelve percent have been performed by emergency procedure, while 60 percent correspond to scheduled routine interventions and the remaining 28 percent, 2,636 interventions, have been scheduled on an extraordinary basis.

The Lanzarote hospital has nine operating rooms, seven of which are used for scheduled surgery and the other two are for obstetrics and general emergencies. This year, the average number of daily interventions in hospital operating rooms has been more than thirty-five. It is worth noting the increase in surgical activity in the dermatology and cardiovascular surgery services, with an increase of 30 and 17 percent, respectively.

Likewise, the interventions performed by the specialists in obstetrics and ophthalmology have also experienced a significant increase of more than ten percent compared to the same period of the previous year. On the contrary, the placement of pacemakers is the only type of intervention that decreases throughout 2022, with a total of 129 devices placed compared to the 189 that were placed last year.

The Surgical Area of Molina Orosa, like other hospitals, had to alter its surgical activity during the acute phase of the pandemic, converting some of its operating rooms and part of the resuscitation area into beds for the care of critically ill patients with covid. This has been the first year, after SARS-CoV-2, in which it has been possible to recover the total practice of surgical activity.

The medical management of Molina Orosa and the surgical team of the Hospital have been committed for years to applying the scientific and technical advances that allow minimally invasive surgery in most interventions of the different specialties such as laparoscopic surgeries, some of them of great complexity.

Finally, it should be noted that major outpatient surgery, for which the intervened patient does not require prior admission or subsequent hospitalization, has been the majority in the Lanzarote center in 2022, and represents 66 percent of the interventions compared to 34 percent that did require hospital admission.
