Tragedy has once again struck Tinajo and three families in the municipality, who were already marked by recent losses or other accidents that also had a fatal outcome.
The first person killed in the traffic accident this Tuesday, Manuel Guillén, was the brother of the well-known wrestler Carmelo Guillén, who also died in an accident, in this case at sea. That event occurred in 2010, when Carmelo was 47 years old. It was on August 21 of that year when he suffered a fall into the sea from his boat, near the Fuentita beach, in the municipality of Yaiza. Due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to the Doctor Negrín Hospital in Gran Canaria, where he eventually died almost a month and a half later.
Carmelo Guillén was one of the great wrestlers of Lanzarote and played for teams such as Altavista or Tinajo at the end of the eighties. Both he and his brother Manuel, who died this Tuesday, were brothers-in-law of the former president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and former Minister of Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Inés Rojas.
Juan Hernández, the youngest victim
As for the 22-year-old who was traveling in the other vehicle and who ended up dying in the hospital, Juan Hernández, his family was also very linked to the world of sports and in particular to that of Canarian wrestling.
His father, Juan Gabriel Hernández Díaz, died just over a year ago, and tragedy strikes this family again now. Juan Gabriel was secretary of the Insular Federation of Canarian Wrestling of Lanzarote and was also linked to other sports, even becoming a director of UD Lanzarote.
In February 2020, the world of wrestling paid him an emotional tribute in which his children participated, including Juan himself, who has now died as a result of this accident. The honoree's daughter and Juan's sister, Isabel Hernández, well known as a basketball player, also attended that event.
Heriberto lost his brother less than a year ago
The third person who died in the accident this Tuesday is another resident of Tinajo, Heriberto, who was traveling in the same vehicle with Manuel Guillén and a third person, who remains admitted to the critical care unit of the Molina Orosa Hospital.
Heriberto had also suffered a recent tragedy, when less than a year ago, in September 2020, he found his brother dead in his residence, in the Tajaste area.
The man lived in a small construction that served as his room, near his brother's house. He had not heard from him for days when he decided to go look for him and found his body. As reported then, he had been dead for some time and the death occurred from natural causes, and the event also shocked a municipality that is once again in mourning for three other losses.
The mayor, Jesús Machín, has lamented the three deaths and has gone to the home to accompany Juan Hernández's mother and Manuel Guillén's family in these difficult times.
