The “Ecopilas Forest” campaign arrives at the educational centers of Lanzarote and La Graciosa

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Ecopilas Foundation, launches the 2022 edition of this school recycling initiative that will allow the reforestation of a new degraded environmental area

Two schools in Lanzarote collected the most batteries in all of Spain

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Department of Waste Management led by Hugo Delgado, and in collaboration with the Ecopilas Foundation, launches a new edition of the campaign "The Ecopilas Forest", a school recycling initiative that will allow in a few months the reforestation of another degraded environmental area. The objective of the Institution presided over by María Dolores Corujo is to "continue promoting the involvement of Lanzarote students and far exceed the 110,000 used batteries deposited in schools".

Councilor Hugo Delgado stated that the goals pursued by the project are, "on the one hand, to give adequate treatment to used batteries to avoid environmental pollution, since we managed to recover more than 75% of their components; and on the other hand, to develop a collaborative project of environmental education and social awareness through the reforestation of new spaces using native species of Lanzarote and La Graciosa".

The plot to be reforested will be of a public nature, and the planting will be carried out by the students of the school that has recycled the most batteries proportionally. Among the native species to be planted will be veroles, sweet tabaibas, bejeques, tederas or tarajales.

How to create a new Ecopilas Forest

The campaign begins next Monday, March 14, and is scheduled to close on May 20. Its main scenario is located in the schools of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with the campaign coordinated again by Lanzarote Recicla.

The objective is to collect and recycle as many used batteries as possible. To this end, the Ecopilas Foundation provides each center with a collection box where students deposit the batteries. At the end of the campaign, Ecopilas provides financial compensation, which will allocate one euro for each kilo of batteries that is recycled thanks to the contributions of the students. "A gesture of environmental responsibility that will then lead to the collaborative reforestation project with native species," they emphasize from the Island Corporation.

Councilor Hugo Delgado has encouraged schools and institutes to join "actively" the campaign "The Ecopilas Forest" to continue mitigating, he says, "the impact of climate change in our environment".
