Discovering Canary Islands is the adventure reality show presented by Pilar Rubio, which has been filmed in several locations in Lanzarote such as Caleta Caballo and La Villa and will tour the other Canary Islands. The program will reveal the most incredible and unusual myths of the archipelago by immersing its contestants in the local culture and traditions. A journey of discovery full of tests, enigmas and routes through wonderful territories that will show contestants and viewers the legend of a region.
For the first time, an OTT platform is betting on an international format where 8 contestants from 8 different nationalities will compete to be the best explorer in Europe. The participants, with an influencer profile and who have not yet been revealed, will find out that, in reality, the islands that make up the Canary Islands are not 8... but 9. La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera hide their own legend. Between reality and folklore, history and fiction, it is said that there is a ninth island: San Borondón. Known as Whale Island, due to the way it appears and disappears in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, it has been the dream of cartographers and navigators for centuries and the objective of the participants.
Discovering Canary Islands, as this first edition will be called, has the support of Promotur - Turismo de Canarias and is conceived and co-produced by Atlantia Media and Mediabrands Content Studio/Initiative. The creative team has extensive experience in production in Spain and internationally of innovative entertainment formats (Survivor, Big Brother, Beijing Express...). Led by Paolo Nocetti, executive producer, and Constantino Martínez, director of R&D and entertainment, the direction of this first season will be in charge of Cristina Jiménez, specialist in entertainment and reality content.
The person in charge of hosting the program will be Pilar Rubio, an internationally known Spanish presenter who has a long career in television. Rubio, with more than 7 and a half million followers on her Instagram account, is excited about the project: “I am happy to be able to present this international format that will reach 42 European countries. It is a format with which I feel very identified: a family program, full of adventures in a unique enclave, such as the Canary Islands”.
The most spectacular scenarios in the Canary Islands will be the setting for impressive tests of strength, ingenuity and skill in a dynamic race that will tour the islands in 6 episodes. During the program, each test is a key to the next, offering an advantage or reward, and the possibility of obtaining at the end of each stage a clue in the form of a coordinate and part of the legend to, finally, reach the final objective: San Borondón. With this new project, one of the objectives is to continue positioning the Canary Islands as the preferred tourist destination for Europeans.
Discovering Canary Islands will be incorporated into the Rakuten Stories collection, which presents Rakuten TV's original and exclusive content with stories of optimism, empowerment and diversity that reflect the company's DNA.
