The Elder Museum of Science and Technology of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria continues in Lanzarote territory, specifically in Teguise, with the Cosmic Zoo exhibition. The exhibition, of an itinerant nature, aims to bring the public closer to ten of the most important astronomical objects in a "simple way", according to its organizers in a statement.
This exhibition is part of the Septenio program promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands and whose objective is to support culture, science and innovation as strategic sectors of the Archipelago. On the occasion of the celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, all the activities of this exhibition revolve around this theme. The exhibition can be visited from May 15 and until June 3.
This museum, attached to the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, has launched this initiative to try to bring the cosmos closer to citizens. In this sense, its managers assure that although the non-specialized population knows certain discoveries of "astronomical objects" such as planets, stars or comets, there are "many others that escape the understanding of the general public." Specifically, this occurs with star and globular clusters, pulsars, quasars or neutron stars.
The exhibition consists of ten panels in which high-quality images of the different astronomical objects are presented, most of them obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as by informative texts. On the other hand, the variety of objects allows a tour of the multiple types of formations with which a global image of the Universe is obtained.
With this exhibition, the Elder Museum of Science and Technology of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria continues its informative work throughout the Islands. Within the framework of the Septenio, the center organizes a series of activities that allow the public to learn first-hand about numerous topics of interest through exhibitions and conferences. Thus, the Septenio aims to ensure that in 2014 the Canary Islands can verify the consolidation of these areas of knowledge, that is, "convert Culture, Science and Innovation into 'headlines' of the international image of the Islands".
