The Ministry of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security and the Ministry of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands have awarded the Argana Compulsory Education Center (CEO) as the most sustainable in the Canary Islands for promoting among students different initiatives and projects that promote awareness about ecological sustainability and the fight against climate change in the 2017 call.
From the regional Executive it is explained that, for six years, this recognition rewards in each academic year the effort of an educational center for the promotion of training and education for the acquisition of values that promote behaviors compatible with sustainable development.
The director of the center received this Wednesday the Vice Minister of the Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blanca Pérez; the Island Director of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mario Pérez; the General Director of Personnel of the Ministry of Education, Juan Rafael Bailón; the Minister of Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Carmen Rosa Márquez, and the Councilor for Education of the Arrecife City Council, Inodelvia Torres, who were interested in the work of the center and the different projects it is developing.
Highlighting environmental respect from an early age
Blanca Pérez highlighted the importance of valuing environmental respect in all areas and promoting an educational culture from an early age. "It is necessary to promote activities that promote in the Canary Islands students the values of respect and care for the natural environment, as well as making them aware of the need for proper management of resources," he said.
The Argana CEO is part, together with another 182 schools in the Archipelago, of the RedECOS Canarian network of educational centers for sustainability. These non-university public centers carry out their activity through a common methodology, such as school eco-audits, which are based on an educational process in which, thanks to the participation of the entire school community, the environmental quality of the center is evaluated and diagnosed and, based on the results obtained, actions are promoted to improve the environmental problems detected.
