A total of seven beaches and one port will have the blue flag this year. This is the eco-label created and developed by the European Federation of Environmental Education that is awarded each year to those European beaches where cleanliness and safety, environmental education and collective action for the protection of the coastal environment are promoted.
The municipality of Tías celebrated this achievement yesterday. For this purpose, the institutional act of raising the flag was held in Playa Grande, Los Pocillos and Matagorda, the three coastal areas of Puerto del Carmen that have achieved this distinction. The mayor of the municipality, Juan José Cruz, together with the councillor for Tourism, Antonio Pérez, were in charge of raising the flags. "It is the recognition of the work and effort of many people who maintain the infrastructure and the beach for both the people who live in the area and those who visit us", said the mayor.
Tourist Information Officers
At the same event, the four people who will work as tourist information officers until next November in Puerto del Carmen were presented. The young people will be distinguished by their blue trousers and orange shirt with a prominent information 'i'.
To this end, they will travel along the seven kilometres of promenade. Their objective will be to answer questions and provide visitors with the information they need "both about the area and the whole island of Lanzarote", said Juan José Cruz. At the same time, they will act as municipal agents to collect data from tourist establishments in order to produce the Puerto del Carmen leisure guide.
Reinforcement of surveillance
On the other hand, surveillance has been reinforced in Puerto del Carmen. In this case, the Local Police of Tías will keep two of its officers on the beaches of the area every day until the month of September. This is to monitor these areas, which are characterised by their maximum occupancy in the summer period. The police will work from eleven in the morning until seven in the afternoon and will patrol the beaches to provide their services to bathers and guarantee safety in a space where visitors from different countries and of all ages coincide.
