This Friday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m., the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise ("arctic dawn" in English) will enter the port of Lanzarote to continue its campaign "The solution to the explorations" against deepwater drilling projects and in favor of a 100% renewable energy scenario. After its visit to Malaga, the organization's vessel will stop in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria between October 24 and November 3 to say no to the explorations and show, with data and arguments, that a clean energy system is beneficial for the environment, the economy and the citizens' pockets.
The Arctic Sunrise arrives in the Canary Islands to support with its presence the outcry against Repsol's project to drill in search of hydrocarbons in the waters of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Greenpeace has shown that "no more hydrocarbon explorations are needed on the Spanish coasts and that it is possible, viable and beneficial to put aside fossil fuels and bet on renewable energies".
This is the first campaign of the ship after protesting against an oil platform in the Arctic, a peaceful action that led to the arrest of 28 activists and two independent journalists, in addition to the retention of the ship for more than ten months in Russia. Now the icebreaker will stop at the other end of the European continent to continue its peaceful fight against explorations and fossil fuels. It will be between October 24 and November 3 in the Canary Islands and will carry out various public activities and meetings with local and political groups.
Both in Lanzarote and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the organization will hold press conferences on board. The first will take place in the port of Arrecife Lanzarote on Monday, November 27 at 11:00 in the morning and will explain the environmental but also economic advantages of a 100% renewable model compared to one based on dirty energies. The consequences that this project will have on the inhabitants of the islands will also be exposed through the presence of local groups and fishermen.
In addition, the doors of the ship will be open for all citizens who "wish to come to know the mythical icebreaker and its stories"
