The institutions of Lanzarote have observed a minute of silence this Monday on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The Island Directorate of the State Administration, the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and several city councils have joined this symbolic gesture convened in all public administrations and different entities in memory of the fatal victims of this violence and in repudiation of it.

In the Cabildo, the act took place at 10:30 a.m. at the door of the main headquarters and in the different dependencies of the Corporation, such as the Department of Tourism and Tourist Centers and the Department of Social Welfare and Center for Attention and Equality for Women (CIAM).

Likewise, the Cabildo of Lanzarote has joined the Institutional Declaration of the Government of the Canary Islands, which recalls that since 2000, a total of 79 women have been murdered in the Canary Islands as victims of this gender violence.

Once again, the Cabildo of Lanzarote echoes the sentiment of this declaration and also expresses its "rejection and condemnation of the macho violence that unfortunately persists in the society of the 21st century and that has its roots in the structural gender inequalities that still exist in our society." According to this declaration, "gender violence is not a private problem, it affects thousands of women and their children every day. It is a problem that concerns all of society, and we must become aware and work to eradicate it."

Silence and activities in the municipalities

For its part, the Arrecife City Council also commemorated this November 25th, with a minute of silence by members of the Corporation and the staff of workers. In addition, according to an agreement of the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (FECAM), the Councilor for Social Services, Ascensión Toledo, read a common manifesto to show the most absolute rejection of attacks on women.

The same has happened in other city councils, such as those of Teguise and Tías. In this last municipality, the Department of Social Welfare has programmed multiple activities linked to the commemoration of the International Day against Gender Violence. Thus, on the morning of this Monday, the central acts took place in an act in the square next to the Tías City Council, and throughout the day different informative talks have been given by the professionals of the Social Welfare area of the Tías City Council in the schools of infant and primary education, and in the Baccalaureate centers throughout the municipality.

On the other hand, within the activities carried out by the Tías City Council to commemorate the International Day against Gender Violence, the Municipal Theater of Tías hosted on the night of last Saturday the staging of the play La Última Vez, by the theater group Somos.
