More than 200 people showed their explicit rejection of gender violence this past Saturday in the first edition of the "Solidarity Race against Gender Violence in Lanzarote 2013", which was held in Arrecife on a circular route that reached 2.5 kilometers of race.
In this first solidarity race that according to the organizers has the vocation to consolidate in future editions, highlighted the participation of a large number of children and youth who, accompanied by their families and friends, raised their voice against gender violence, along with various personalities and authorities of the island who also wanted to show their rejection of gender violence and thus support the work developed by the women's associations Mararía and Tiemar, respectively. The funds obtained from the registrations have been allocated to these two associations for the development of support projects for women and sons and daughters victims of gender violence.
The race was promoted by the Canarian Institute of Equality and the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the CIAM. It also has the support of the City Council of Arrecife in the logistics and organization of the race.
Politicians and elite athletes
Among the authorities that mobilized against gender violence, participated the director of the Canarian Institute of Equality, Elena Máñez Rodríguez; the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, the island director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, Juan Prats; the first vice president of the Corporation, Joaquín Caraballo; the Minister of Social Welfare, Marciano Acuña; and other public officials and representatives of the island society, such as the presidents and members of these two groups, Nieves Rosa Hernández and Vicenta Monge. Also noteworthy was the participation of the Olympic runner José Carlos Hernández who collaborated not only with his presence and support, but also with his image in the commercial that was recorded to promote the race.
"To all the participants, to those who arrived first and to those who arrived last, to all the volunteers and professionals who work daily in projects linked to women and their sons and daughters who suffer gender violence on the island, and to all those who this Saturday raised their voice and mobilized against this social scourge, from the Cabildo of Lanzarote we thank them and our most sincere public recognition", said the Minister of Social Welfare of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Marciano Acuña, who recalled and encouraged the population to participate this coming November 25 of the events scheduled for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Finally, from the first Corporation has also wanted to publicly congratulate the winners of the Race whose first three places went to Tinguaro Quintero del Rosario, Elías Estévez and Pablo Ojeda.
