The Hematology and Hemotherapy Service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has obtained the quality accreditation from the CAT Foundation, a Quality Certification body in Transfusion, Cell and Tissue Therapy for compliance with the standards related to transfusion practice and quality management.
The certification obtained is endorsed by the scientific societies in the field of hematology and blood transfusion and has ENAC accreditation, which adds international validity and guarantees that transfusion activity and self-donation are carried out in accordance with quality standards in blood transfusion. and contributes to the involvement of all personnel with continuous improvement.
Previous work
This recognition is obtained after an exhaustive inspection of the activity and documentation of the Service and after passing an external audit of the different areas. The accreditation is the result of the effort of the professionals of the Transfusion Service and the Quality Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital to demonstrate compliance with the established organizational and quality standards.
The Hematology Service has been preparing for more than a year to achieve it and its professionals have received training on the quality of processes and good practices in the laboratory. In addition, they have created different protocols for each and every one of the procedures that are carried out in the Service.
Standards required in safety, traceability and training
CAT certification constitutes a guarantee of control and safety in the traceability of donations and transfusions that directly benefits patients. Regarding personnel, it guarantees their qualification, training and permanent updating of training.
The manager of the Lanzarote Health Services, Pablo Eguia, points out that the accreditation is due to the work of all the professionals of the Hematology and Hemotherapy Service and their willingness to provide quality care to patients.
For her part, the head of the Hematology Service, Yapci Ramos, is satisfied with the effort made by the laboratory technical staff to obtain this certification that guarantees the quality control and safety of the entire process of conservation, distribution and blood transfusion to patients.
Service Activity
The Transfusion Service of the Molina Orosa Hospital is responsible for distributing blood components for the necessary transfusion support in the medical and surgical activity of all the hospital's services. During 2023, it performed a total of 3,555 transfusions to patients, of which 2,879 were red blood cell concentrates, 191 plasma units and 485 platelet units.
The Hematology and Hemotherapy Service of Molina Orosa has also had ISO 9001:2015 quality certification for two years.
