The Mercedes Medina school celebrated its XXVI anniversary this Monday, the last as a center for early childhood and primary education, since next year it will become a secondary school. It was "a small commemorative toast coinciding with the date of the agreement in which the Arrecife City Council decided to name the school after her", according to sources from the capital's Consistory.
Among the attendees were the relatives of Mercedes Medina Díaz and members of the educational association that bears the name of this historical teacher from Arrecife; as well as the Councilor for Education of Arrecife, Ascensión Toledo, who congratulated the center on its celebration. Also present at the event were "the first director of the school in the 1990-91 academic year, Luis Morales, another former director, Ernestina Pérez, the Primary faculty, the management team of the new Secondary Education Center and members of the AMPA", according to the City Council of the capital.
The current director of the school, Javier Perdomo, read an emotional letter sent from La Laguna by Mercedes Medina's daughter, Maura Palarea Medina, "about the brilliant trajectory of the center". Also Ascensión Toledo and the president of the Mercedes Medina Association expressed "the best wishes for the new journey of the center". The act concluded with the commitment to celebrate a week of fraternization of the entire educational community next June for the change of educational use of the center, according to the City Council in a statement.
