This is the fourth edition of the project that began on September 1 with a new team of professionals. Nieves Rosa Hernández, president of Mararía, presented the new team, which is made up of a social worker, a psychologist and a pedagogue.

The second initiative is the project of "Social and Occupational Skills for Immigrant Women", which includes training courses aimed at finding and improving employment, as well as learning coping strategies.

Insertion into the world of work

"Gender violence exists even if entities and the media do not give it much preponderance; it is a marginalized problem, which stays inside the house," said the psychologist. As they explained, the project began with the recruitment of "users" through volunteers, because the project is not continuously funded, but the administration only provides funding for certain months.

In this project, immigrants will prepare for their insertion into the world of work through 5 modules: Cleaning, Cooking and Nutrition, Geriatrics, Childcare and Job Orientation. All are led by professionals and theoretical classes will be combined with more practical ones.

Between 25 and 30 women

Nieves Hernández recalled that these are projects financed by the Canary Islands Women's Institute, but not in their entirety, since they are co-financed by Mararía by 5%.

"In previous editions, "Nueva Fénix" has been very successful, with a participation level of 25-30 women in each edition, in addition to the women who are joining throughout the year, who are also attended with psychological and legal support," said Nieves Hernández. Regarding the project with immigrants, in each edition they have managed to place about 15 women in the labor market.

Both projects have started on September 1 and will run until November 31. In any case, they will launch modules on sexual education and family planning, through entities that collaborate with them, outside the official program.

A problem for everyone

"What we intend with this press conference is to make a call to all public or private entities, and to all those people who know any of these two problems in their environment to direct these women to Mararía or to their nearest local entities to be part of this project that, in this last stretch of the year, we have to launch and finish officially," concluded the president.

For the realization of these projects, they have contacted the Civil Guard, the women's areas of the different town halls, the INEM, the unions, and they still have to contact Cáritas, Médicos del Mundo, Cruz Roja and any entity that can help them. They are also in contact with immigrant associations.

All of them are entities in which potential "users" are recruited. Recruitment is very important, as is ensuring that the information reaches all social entities, in order to help the maximum number of people possible.

Lack of coordination

They complain about the absence of intergovernmental coordination: "we miss a coordination work of all those who work in this area, which is proposed officially from the institutions; every time we start a project we go to the institutions to request a subsidy, but it should be them who officially coordinate all those who work in the same resources, because it would be a much more effective way to provide this service," said Nieves Hernández.
