Lanzarote's figures in 2018: a de facto population of 204,000 people and more than 129,000 vehicles

The Data Center of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, a department of the Area of Education, Citizen Participation and Youth coordinated by the councilor Paula Corujo, has begun the digital distribution of the 2018 Lanzarote Statistical Yearbook.

According to it, the island, which has an area of 846 square kilometers, had in 2018 a population of law of 149,183 inhabitants, of which 41% resided in the municipality of Arrecife. 22% of the residents in Lanzarote were of foreign nationality, mainly British, Moroccan, Italian, Colombian and German. In addition to the residents, the average tourist population was 55,011, with which the total number of people on the island exceeded 204,000.

The 2018 Lanzarote Statistical Yearbook dedicates a broad chapter to economic indicators such as the number of companies, price indices, information from the primary sector (agriculture, livestock and fishing), construction, commerce, public sector and mortgages.

Tourism and labor data

In the tourism section, the accommodation offer is detailed, which amounted to 71,852 places in collective establishments and which had an occupancy record of 82%, with an increase of 3% in the price of the average daily rate. During the past year, Lanzarote registered the visit of 3,063,316 tourists, 2.6% less than in 2017. The publication also counts the data of the average stay and the expenditure of these tourists.

Among the labor data of Lanzarote, the Cabildo discards the increase of 4.4% of affiliations to Social Security, yielding a figure of 56,709 affiliates. Also in the labor aspect, it is highlighted that last year 71,805 contracts were made on the island, of which nine out of ten were temporary and, within these, 56% lasted less than three months.

Regarding the number of registered unemployed, although it was possible to decrease by 4.5%, the island still had 10,879 people in this situation in December 2018. The year 2018 ended with an unemployment rate of 19%, slightly lower than that of the Canary Islands, but somewhat higher than the rate in Spain.

Water, energy and transport

The fourth chapter of the 2018 Lanzarote Statistical Yearbook is dedicated to water, energy and waste. As a highlight, the Cabildo states that a new rebound in fuel prices is observed during 2018. On the other hand, it points out that the evolution of electrical energy indicators stabilized, as did those of water production and consumption.

A section on the island's transport is also available in the document. In the case of air influx, the number of passengers stabilized during 2018 with a figure of 7.3 million. Regarding maritime transport, the transit of goods increased by 2% and cruise passengers amounted to 423,000

The most significant data of land transport, according to the institution, were the five million travelers that were counted in the interurban and urban public buses, on an island that has a park of more than 129,000 vehicles.

Education and Health

In the social section, figures for education (with more than 24,000 students enrolled in the 71 existing non-university education centers) and health on the island are presented, as well as crime rates, which decreased by 8%. Judicial data and violence against women are also included.

The "most complete and exhaustive" publication

"It is the most complete and exhaustive publication of the Cabildo of Lanzarote that is carried out on the island since it delves into the most relevant information of the main socioeconomic indicators of the island of the year 2018 and the first chapters are dedicated to the geographical and demographic areas", highlighted the councilor Paula Corujo about the Lanzarote Statistical Yearbook, a publication that has been carried out for 28 years and that "has become a reference document to know the island reality".

The 2018 Lanzarote Statistical Yearbook is only available in digital version and can be consulted and expanded on the website of the Data Center of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, whose address is www.datosdelanzarote.com

On this website you can also consult updated information on the different island statistical indicators, as well as the 2,300 documents and reports that appear organized in various thematic areas. Those who wish can request specific information in the email datos@cabildodelanzarote.com. The department also offers a geographic information system on island infrastructures and equipment.

Finally, the Data Center also has the historical information service called Digital Memory of Lanzarote (www.memoriadelanzarote.com), which offers the user thousands of photographs, videos and historical documents of the island. And since 2015, the Data Center manages and produces the contents of the exhibitions of La Casa Amarilla, the old headquarters of the Cabildo in Arrecife, which has been converted into a museum of memory and knowledge of Lanzarote.
