The former councilor and professor of the IES of Tías, Juan Cruz Sepúlveda, received last Saturday the Viera y Clavijo award, which recognizes the best teachers in the Canary Islands, in an act that took place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. From the City Council they wanted to publicly congratulate this neighbor of the town and former councilor of the municipality and show their satisfaction for "this successful distinction".
From the Consistory they emphasize that "this professor, still active, has been a prominent professional on the island who, in addition to his extensive career as a teacher, has also been a defender of trade union freedoms, a promoter of the identity and history of Tías and councilor" in the City Council.
The Canary Islands recognized this Saturday the work and dedication of education professionals and institutions and people who work in the field of non-university education with the highest award given each year in the Archipelago: the Viera y Clavijo medal. The Professional Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas hosted the institutional act of homage in which the award was given to la Once in the Canary Islands, four teachers, an educational inspector and a center director, chosen from "among the many and good things that exist in the Canary Islands and are active", according to the Minister of Education, Universities and Sustainability of the Canary Islands Government, José Miguel Pérez.
The recognized with this decoration were Jacinto Alonso Sánchez, from la Once; Juan Cruz Sepúlveda, teacher of the IES Tías (Lanzarote); Manuel de los Reyes Hernández Sánchez, educational inspector; Carmen de León Hernández, teacher of the CEIP Agustín Millares Sall, and Catalina de León Hernández, teacher of the CEIP Laurisilva, both centers of Gran Canaria; Adolfo Rodríguez González, teacher of the CEIP La Sabina (La Palma); and Pedro Yedras Contreras, director of the San Juan Bosco center of Tenerife. "This is a simple but relevant act", said the Minister of Education, because it honors people "very representative of what is done today in la Educación in the Canary Islands. Each of them with a magnificent career and a great dedication and commitment to teaching".
As is known, Juan Cruz was appointed in September 2003 Insular Director of Education on the island of Lanzarote and "in his stage was lived the highest indicator of arrival of students from other places to the island". Cruz Sepúlveda began his studies of Magisterio in la Escuela de Formación del Profesorado de Las Palmas in 1973, and in October 1975 he began his teaching activity as an interim teacher in a regional school in the south of Gran Canaria.
In 1982 he returned to his native island and taught his teachings in la Escuela Unitaria de Uga. In 1987 he participated in trade union life as a prominent member of the STEC. He combined teaching activity with that of councilor, in the opposition, for CC in the City Council of Tías. He is co-founder and promoter of la Asociación Cultural Educativa Mercedes Medina Díaz and of la Asociación Tías, Foro por la Identidad.
