Hoteliers receive containers for waste management

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the environmental organization Ecoembes, has launched the project 'Ecohosteleros'. With this campaign, both institutions, in coordination with the Government of the Canary Islands, the City Councils of Teguise, Tías and Yaiza, and FACYRE (Federation of Associations of Chefs and Confectioners of Spain) seek to promote the recycling of packaging in the hotel industry through selective collection, providing the Island's establishments with the necessary tools to facilitate this process.

During the campaign, more than one hundred hoteliers have received containers to correctly manage their plastic, can and briks packaging waste. In total, 132 means have been delivered, including 97 120-liter buckets and 35 bins. Specifically, there are already 150 new establishments located in Teguise, La Graciosa, Tías and Yaiza that have joined the 'Ecohosteleros' initiative.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, pointed out that "this sector is the main support of the island and, therefore, to continue promoting the environmental policies for which we are betting, we must facilitate sustainable practices in the hotel environment".

"Our hotel sector is one of the leaders in the entire country, so it has to be treated as such in all aspects, and, from the point of view of sustainability, it cannot be less. Now, thanks to the collaboration of entrepreneurs and the work of all the people involved in the project, a large part of our establishments are joining the more than 24,000 that already have the 'Ecohostelero' seal throughout Spain," Corujo highlighted.

For his part, the Minister of Waste, Hugo Delgado, explained that the project also aims to promote the circular economy, making packaging have a second life, while promoting responsible consumption.

"Our role is to draw the path and provide establishments with the necessary resources to develop this project, and we appreciate the collaboration of all of them and their willingness to be part of an ambitious and important initiative in equal parts," the counselor pointed out.

This project is part of the Canarias Circular Plan, an initiative developed by Ecoembes together with the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Councils and the Canary Federation of Municipalities, with the aim of improving the selective collection and recovery of light packaging and paper cardboard waste in the Canary Islands, with criteria of social acceptance, technical efficiency and environmental and economic viability, in line with regional and European regulations in this matter.
