The Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac), which reports to the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, has published the study of the most common names of boys and girls born during the year 2010 in the archipelago. Again, Daniel and Daniela were the favorites of parents in that period, being the names chosen for 2.2 and 2.5 percent of boys and girls, respectively.
Daniela, with 220 cases, repeats for the third consecutive year as the most common name among girls and Daniel, with 210 cases, for the second year. In the case of girls, after Daniela, are Lucía, Paula, Sofía and Adriana, and in the case of boys, the names of Alejandro, Diego, Hugo and Pablo follow Daniel.
As for the most frequent Canary Island names, Gara and Nira are the most used for girls, while for boys parents chose Aday, Ancor, Airam, Iriome, Nauzet and Abián.
The most common names on each Island
The Istac report also breaks down by island the predilection of parents when choosing a name for their children. Thus, in Lanzarote, most of the girls born in 2010 were named Daniela, Sara, Sofía, Ainara and Adriana, and the boys, Alejandro, Diego, Daniel, Hugo and Álvaro.
In Fuerteventura, they were Lucía, Daniela, Sofía, Nayara and Patricia for them and Alejandro, Mohamed, Adrián and Daniel for the boys.
In the case of Gran Canaria, Daniela, Lucía, Paula, Adriana and Sara are also repeated. Hugo, Pablo, Daniel, Alejandro and Gabriel are the names that most of the children from Gran Canaria received.
In Tenerife, the most chosen girl names were Lucía, Daniela, Sofía, Paula and Carla and the boy names Diego, Daniel, Alejandro, Adrián and Pablo.
Aitana, Carla, Claudia and Julia are the ones that are repeated most frequently among the girls from La Gomera, and Hugo Diego, Jorge and Pablo in the case of boys.
In La Palma, the most used female names during 2010 were Andrea, Alejandra and Daniela and the boy names, Diego, Daniel and Hugo.
In the case of El Hierro, the most frequent boy names were Moisés and Nicolás, while in the case of the girls from El Hierro no name is repeated with more than one case.
