Criminal offenses grew by 4.1% in 2024, despite the decline in recent months

Criminal offenses increased by 4.1% in Lanzarote in 2024 compared to the previous year, despite the fact that crime decreased between September and December. This is shown by the indicators of crime in the municipalities of Lanzarote with more than 20,000 inhabitants: Arrecife, Teguise and Tías; collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.

In total, 7,285 criminal offenses were recorded in Lanzarote last year. Most of them, 6,224 related to conventional crime, such as robberies, thefts, drug trafficking or cybercrime.

24.3% of the crimes committed in Lanzarote during the past year were thefts, that is, the action of seizing an object that belongs to another person without the consent of its owner and is punishable by prison sentences of between one and five years.

Meanwhile, 14.6% of these crimes are related to cybercrime, that is, crimes committed through the internet. Thus, computer scams, which account for 13.5% of the total, have suffered a slight decrease (of 3.1%) compared to the previous year.

More than half of the criminal offenses committed last year are included in the section "rest of conventional crime", which does not specify what types of crimes it includes.

 

Crimes against sexual indemnity are growing

In terms of percentage growth, sexual assaults have increased by 81% between 2023 and 2024. Thus, last year alone, the state security forces and corps registered 38 sexual assaults with penetration. In addition, there were another 98 crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity, which have increased by 32.4%.

Another of the crimes that have grown in percentage terms are vehicle thefts, which are now 66.7% more than a year ago and reach 70.
