The businessman from Gran Canaria, Jaime Cortezo, owner of the land on the Islote del Francés in Arrecife, passed away this Monday after suffering a heart attack in Lanzarote.

The businessman resided in Gran Canaria but, according to sources close to him, he died at his home in Arrecife, a city to which he had been linked for more than two decades due to his interest in urbanizing the Islote del Francés.

During the Mayoralty of the also deceased Cándido Reguera, Jaime Cortezo visited the island on several occasions following Reguera's intention to erect a high-rise building on the land of the Islote del Francés, which would be an "icon" for the city of Arrecife.

In recent years, the businessman from Gran Canaria was involved in various legal cases and had a conviction for tax evasion, although it was not yet final.
